Nigeria Vehicle Arrival: Prepare the Document Handoff

Arrival planning starts before the vessel reaches Nigeria. Build one consistent file for the importer, bank where applicable, clearance representative and carrier. Keep customs preparation, carrier release and physical collection as separate checks; one completed step does not confirm the others.

Reconcile the shipment identity

Match the VIN, vehicle description, purchase invoice, ownership document and transport document. Check the importer or consignee spelling and contact details before final shipping instructions are issued. List every mismatch and ask the document owner to correct it. Store the final versions together, preserving earlier versions for the correction trail. A photograph of a title and a draft bill of lading should not be mistaken for a complete accepted clearance file.

Ask which Nigerian process applies

Use Nigeria Customs Service’s current import-procedure guidance as the starting point. Ask the bank and clearance representative which Form M, PAAR, declaration, valuation and supporting records apply to this importer and vehicle. Get the required sequence, responsible party and missing information in writing. Do not reuse another importer’s file or assume a passenger-car example covers every vehicle. Confirm eligibility before shipping; an arrival document checklist cannot make an ineligible vehicle admissible. [1]

Prepare release and collection evidence

Ask the carrier and terminal for their current release instructions, payable charges, collection authorization and availability notice. Name the collector, identify the equipment needed and verify that clearance and carrier holds have actually been resolved. Keep payment receipts and release references with the shipment file. If a requirement remains pending, record the next action and owner rather than promising a collection date. Send the transport inquiry with that status so the inland handoff can be planned accurately.
